Art Studio Takes a New Look at a Masterpiece
Submitted by Marialice, Grade 10
We’ve all seen it before. One of the most famous paintings in the world, created by Leonardo da Vinci just before 1500 AD, The Last Supper. We’re familiar with the people depicted- Jesus in the middle, his disciples all around him. Because it is a prominent part of history, of course it’s learned about in schools. Art teachers will briefly mention it as a way to introduce perspective, a technique the painting brought back.
But what if they went beyond mentioning it?
This year’s art class has gone above and beyond the usual treatment towards the painting. Instead of just using it as another example of techniques and tips, the thirteen students donned their robes and tunics, sat down at the table, and got to work. After a long struggle of positioning their bodies, all it took was a quick photo, a lot of paint, and a lot of patience. While the finished product might not measure up to Da Vinci’s work, the students can feel proud of their take on a classic piece of art.
